Rights Groups hold Human Chain for Human Rights

Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP), Take Back the Tech and other human rights groups held yesterday a symbolic mass action in E. Rodriguez Ave., Cubao, Quezon City on the occasion of the International Human Rights day celebration. They called on PNoy Government to respect and protect human rights.

The group composed of more than a hundred participants, mostly youth, formed a human chain for human rights along the stretch of E. Rodriguez Avenue while holding placards of human rights issues under the present administration.

Expressing their dismay on the enactment of RA 10175 or the “Anti-Cyber Crime Law” the group reiterated their calls declaring it as violation of the peoples’ freedom of expression and other constitutional rights, “Technology should give us freedom not fears! Laws should be protecting our freedoms and not criminalize it,” as their placards say.

The group also reminded the government about issues like the existence of Political Prisoners which Presidential Spokesperson Lacierda has denied in a previous statement.

According to TFDP, the Aquino government has yet to prove its sincerity fifteen months after last year’s dialogue in response to the hunger strike undertaken by political prisoners.

Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP) celebrated the International Human Rights day 2011 in December 9 at the 70’s Bistro, Anonas, Quezon City.  The celebration was a Night of Memories about the heroism of human rights defenders and peoples’ victory against Martial Law and combined with the creativity of the new generation through photography, poetry, music, dances and videos.

The Night was the culmination of a Four-Month long festival entitled Beinte Singko: Festival of Memories, Creation of New Stories that went around  different campuses in Metro Manila.  It aimed to help raise awareness among the youth about human rights through exhibits (online and in campuses) of 25 photos and poems coming from TFDP’s Museum of Courage and Resistance and 25 finalists of Tinamaan ka ng Lente! 2011 and Berso sa Kalsada, Tula ng Paglaya.  It was also composed of several forums and film showings in campuses organized through Youth for Rights (Y4R).

It was also a night to remember for the human rights community since for the first time from a very long time Gary Granada, Noel Cabangon, Cookie Chua and Bayang Barrios shared the stage for human rights celebration.

The event was also highlighted by performances from Miko Pepito, Tondo Tribe, Ka Levy Balgos De La Cruz, Samahan ng mga Anak ng Desaparecidos (SAD) and the Collective Arts of Students and Thespians (CAST) of University of Makati.

Beinte Singko was co-sponsored by the Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates (PAHRA), Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM), Asian Federation Against Enforced Disappearance (AFAD) and Families of Victims of Involuntary Disappearance (FIND).

ASEAN Summit issues are ASEAN Peoples’ concerns: Uphold, assert and protect ASEAN Peoples’ human rights

ASEAN SUMMIT ISSUES ARE ASEAN PEOPLES’ CONCERNS:
UPHOLD, ASSERT AND PROTECT ASEAN PEOPLES’ HUMAN RIGHTS

pahra_logo_copyThe Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates (PAHRA) believes that issues discussed in ASEAN Summits are the concerns of the ASEAN peoples individually and collectively as members of ASEAN.  It is for this reason that civil society organizations coming from the member countries engage ASEAN both on the national and regional levels as issues emerging from the three pillars of ASEAN cannot be insulated, much less severed from human rights concerns. Peoples’ experiences of gross human rights violations in the economic, civil, cultural, political and social arenas in the regional level which are consequent, directly and indirectly, of ASEAN policies must be discussed and resolved on the same level.  It should not to be solely the concern of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR).  Human rights are to permeate the framework and workings of the three pillars of ASEAN.

Last November 18, Indonesian and Filipino activists for climate justice wanted to engage the ASEAN Summit so that the ASEAN leaders address resolutely the negative impact of actions taken since the ASEAN Joint Statement on Climate Change to the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) up until before the recently concluded Summit.  Seven activists, 3 Indonesians and 4 Filipinos,  have been arrested and detained.
