Tinamaan_ka_ng_lente_teaserFestival Theme:     Upholding and defending Human Rights in 1 million ways

On December 10, 2010, we are to celebrate the 62nd year of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).   Sixty two years ago when member states of the United Nations declared to commit themselves in the respect, protection and fulfillment of all human rights of all the peoples of all nations.  Sixty two years have passed but human rights violations and abuses still persist and governments fail to consistently address and perform their obligations, worst is most governments’ utmost disrespect and violation of the rights of the people remain.
For years, we have campaigned for people to know their rights.  They do know, but it should not just stop there.  The people must be encouraged not only to know their rights but also to act on it, to help stop and break impunity in the country and make violators accountable.

Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP) launches “Tinamaan ka ng Lente!” a human rights photo contest among the youth.  It will not only aim for awareness building but will also try to creatively make the people get involved.  Through images captured in the lenses of young photographers, it hopes to inspire people to realize that even the smallest and simplest action and participation can help in the defense of everyone’s rights.

“Tinamaan ka ng Lente” is a part of the BeHR Fest that aims to popularize HR and make people to own it, assert it and defend it.  This years’ BeHR fest will try to encourage its audience to become HR defenders and advocates in 1 million ways.

Rights groups cry foul over the linking of a human rights defender to the May 13, 2009 Zamboanga airport bombing that killed two people and hurt 12 others, including Sulu Gov. Abdusakur Tan.

At a press conference in Quezon City, human rights groups condemned the tagging as bombing suspect Temogen Sahipa Tulawie, the provincial chairperson of the Consortium of Bangsamoro Civil Society (CBCS).

The groups that organized the Quezon City press conference were the Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP), Mindanao Peoples Caucus (MPC), Mindanao Solidarity Network (MSN) and the Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates (PAHRA).

Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP) supports Mr. Temogen “Cocoy” Tulawie in his quest for justice not only for himself but for all the people of Sulu province whose rights were violated. Being a human rights defender, it is his conviction to both God and the people to act against the human rights violations that endanger his life and that of his family.

Statement of Cocoy Tulawie

“Sige ka, magiging Cocoy ka.”
tulawilie_2This line has become part of the equation to scare Human Rights workers and the people in Sulu away from the very thing that is inherent to human -- their rights. The Tausugs are being turned into a bunch of walking zombies apathetic to state abuses and pass them off as another foul meal gone into their stomachs. By making a case out of me, the Sulu local government has so far been relatively successful in their tactics to shut people’s voices from speaking out and having a take on what is right and wrong in their own community. But so long as there are Tausugs who know believe in the sanctity of Life, the government can never debauch the very purpose of its existence -- to protect its people. There’s always one out of ten souls who dare and resist to be gagged and mummed and they serve as that sliver of light all throughout our struggle. With that, I cannot say that the Voldemorts of Sulu local government are wholly successful in their attempt to silence us.
