Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

A Blessed Easter to all of you! Easter brought joy and consolation to us and our communities because we see in it a victory of LIFE OVER DEATH, LIGHT OVER DARKNESS, and GOOD OVER EVIL. And yet it has not assuaged our anxiety about future events. We have seen so many glitches in the Automated Election System and we are appalled by the cavalier attitude of COMELEC officials about these. We see unfolding before our eyes what we have suspected – GMA’s desire to cling to power at all cost - her running for congress, her manipulation of the law to make her cohorts run for congress, the prostitution of the party list system to enable ridiculous representations like Mikey Arroyo representing the security guards, one of their relatives representing balut vendors, etc. Now the Supreme Court has done the unconscionable act – allowing Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to name the Supreme Court Chief Justice even against the Constitution and preceding decisions of the SC. In light of these events, we see the possibility of

1. Failed elections due to various technical causes
2. Failure of proclamation of national candidates
3. Transition Government headed by GMA
4. Massive undetectable electronic cheating
5. Junta
6. Martial Law

These possibilities Call for PRAYER AND FASTING, VIGILANCE and COMMITMENT.

We encourage our communities to undertake fasting and prayer. We call for discernment and action. Now more than ever, our people need the accompaniment of our religious brothers and sisters.

We urge our communities to join us in prayer every Friday and light a candle for clean, honest, peaceful and credible elections. We implore our communities to VOTE AND TO WATCH AT POLLING PLACES and CANVASSING AREAS. We must guard against any attempt to frustrate the peoples will before, during and after elections.

Our Mission Partner, Task Force Detainees of the Philippines is a member of a national coalition that will observe, document and report on the entire electoral process. This effort is BANTAY ELEKSYON.

We urge our religious communities and all people of goodwill to support this noble effort to ensure a clean, honest, peaceful and credible election this May 2010. We ask no less than for your bravery, dedication and sacrifice to protect, safeguard and defend the sanctity of the ballot.

For any inquiries and questions on how you can do your share please do not hesitate to contact Emmanuel “Misty” Amistad who is BANTAY ELEKSYON’s Metro Manila Coordinator at 437-8054/9950246. For those outside Metro Manila you can contact BANTAY ELEKSYON National Office at 433-541 ;
Fax # 332-9389 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . You can register online as a Citizen Reporter at www.bantayeleksyon.org.

Though hoping for the best, we should be prepared for the worst. If any of the above scenarios come to pass, we should be COMMITTED to join protest actions that will clearly show that we will not take the frustration of our peoples’ will lying down.

At this critical hour, let our prophetic voices be heard throughout the land and let our call for vigilance and action be guided by Him who redeemed us all!

Truly yours,

Member congregations and Mission Partners of the Association of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines (AMRSP), the religious group that led the peoples’ campaign for truth during the ZTE broadband deal scandal and against cha-cha, again are calling for peoples’ unified action against the growing threat of a failure of election in May 2010.

In a statement issued by AMRSP addressed to all its brothers and sisters, Sr. Mary John Mananzan, OSB and Fr. Jesus Malit, SSS, AMRSP Co-Chairpersons call for a PRAYER AND FASTING, VIGILANCE and COMMITMENT amidst the many glitches in the Automated Election System and the seeming cavalier attitude of COMELEC officials about these.

They added, “We see unfolding before our eyes what we have suspected – GMA’s desire to cling to power at all cost - her running for congress, her manipulation of the law to make her cohorts run for congress, the prostitution of the party list system to enable ridiculous representations like Mikey Arroyo representing the security guards, one of their relatives representing balut vendors, etc. Now the Supreme Court has done the unconscionable act – allowing Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to name the Supreme Court Chief Justice even against the Constitution and preceding decisions of the SC.
