GMA and DENR’s crimes against mother earth are assaults on human dignity

Protecting the earth is defending the right to life of the people. To ravage and desecrate mother earth is an assault on human dignity.

The Arroyo administration has perpetrated a crime against mother earth and the people by opening the doors for greedy large-scale mining companies to ravage our mountains, rivers, farmers and our indigenous peoples for the sake of profit.   While she and her cohorts in the government especially in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) are profiting in the guise of national development, large foreign and local companies continue to abuse not only our natural resources but our peoples’ human dignity while we suffer in poverty, indignity and natural disasters.

As guardians of the earth, the Indigenous peoples were mostly harassed and forced away from their sacred lands.  Their sources of subsistence destroyed, their homes burnt and they were stripped of their dignity and right to life.

Today, actually we have no reasons to happily celebrate Earth day.  The relevance of Earth day celebrations 40 years ago were marked with environmental laws enacted for protection of mother earth but now here in the Philippines what we have is nothing but laws that are not being implemented e.g.  Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, National Integrated Protected Areas System Act, IPRA . More so the environment and the people are suffering from the implementation of  Mining Act of 1995 which that does not only allow foreign companies to own our minerals, lands and mountains but also gives way to violations of our people’s rights. Also we have nothing but a government that aggressively enforces this law through the issuance of Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement (FTAA) to Oceana Gold Philippines (OGPI) in Kasibu, Nueva Viscaya and such other issuances in different parts of the country e.g Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) to other large scale mining corporations.

April 2010 Earth Day is marked with government’s lack of protection of the environment and fulfillment of the indigenous peoples’ right to self determination. It is ironic that Earth Day is marked not by care and nurture, not by respect and protection but by destruction and profit, by violations and impunity.

Indigenous peoples, farmers and communities in Nueva Vizcaya, Rural folks in Manicani islands and Homonhon in Visayas, and fishermen of Murcielagos Bay are just few of the affected communities that show strong resistance against mining.  But despite the continuous and unwavering dissent against the so called development aggression, the government seemingly ignores the cry of the people.  These show that GMA extends no genuine concern for the environment and the rights of the people.

Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP) calls for a complete reform in government.  We call on the people to manifest NO vote for pro-mining candidates.  For mother earth and human rights sake, end the violations and impunity now.
