Church and CSOs lead prayer service for slain journalist and envi advocate Doc Gerry
Vows to continue struggle against mining in Palawan

Quezon City—The National Secretariat for Social Action-Justice and Peace of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP-NASSA) organized a candlelight procession and holy mass concelebrated by Bishops Edgardo Juanich and Broderick Pabillo in honor and memory of Doc Gerry Ortega, yesterday.

Together with environmental groups, church leaders and guests held a prayer service dubbed “Candles for Doc Gerry, Candles for a Peaceful, Mining-free Palawan” at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources head office where the groups proceeded after a procession from NBN Channel 4 Office, in Visayas Avenue.

CBCP-NASSA Executive Secretary Fr. Edu Gariguez said, “His death has been attributed by many to the retribution by those whom he has challenged in the course of his anti-mining campaign.  May his sacrifice encourage us to do more and work harder for the protection of the environment.”

Doc Gerry was gunned down last January 24 after his morning radio show in Puerto Princesa City.

“We are one with the Filipino people in condemning the brutal killing of Dr. Gerry Ortega, a fellow defender of our environment. Doc Gerry is a crusader who only wanted to protect Palawan’s communities and rich biodiversity, our nation’s ‘last frontier’. We call on the P-Noy administration to put a halt on these dastardly acts and bring justice to our fallen environmental crusaders,” stated Judy Pasimio, executive director of Legal Rights and Natural Resources – Friends of the Earth (LRC-KsK/FoEI).

Environmental group, HARIBON also joined the service. “Doc Gerry’s crusade to protect Palawan’s forests, water, and communities should not end in vain. Haribon joins the calls for justice not only for him and his fellow slain environmental advocates but also for the environment and for the people,” said HARIBON executive director Blas Tabaranza.

“Last week Palaweños already launched the anti-mining signature campaign. Today, and until mining is totally banned in the province, we will not take a step back. We will continue with the fight, for Doc Gerry and for all environmental martyrs and activists who risked their lives and died for our advocacies,” said ATM National Coordinator Jaybee Garganera.

Group leaders further appealed to hear the call of mining communities in Palawan and Ortega’s supporters and co-advocates.

“We call on the President to start heeding the call of his ‘bosses’ for a mining-free Palawan and a policy shift on mining: put communities and the environment at the center of your development agenda.” Pasimio added.

“We call on you, Mr, President, to support the initiatives of our Save Palawan Movement for a mining-free Palawan… it is our hope that the life of Doc Gerry will preserve Palawan as our Last Frontier,” Gariguez concluded.

A prayer service was simultaneously held in Puerto Princesa, hometown of Doc Gerry Ortega and many mining-affected communities.

Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM) is an alliance of mining-affected communities and their support groups of NGOs/POs and other civil society organizations who are opposing the aggressive promotion of large-scale mining in the Philippines. The group is calling for the scrapping of the Philippine Mining Act of 1995 and the enactment of a new mineral management law.  They are also pushing for the revocation of EO 270-A and a moratorium on all large-scale mining applications and operations.  (30)
