dubbed as

“Marinduque Continuing Quest for Justice”

One of the active cases filed against Marcopper, in the Barangays of Magapua and Bocboc in the municipality of Mogpog, 60 residents currently seek to claim damages from Marcopper Mining, after the Maguila-guila siltation dam broke at the height of a typhoon in 1993, causing a flood of mine tailings and toxic effluent that washed away their fields and homes. Even today, almost 17 years after the disaster, the tailings-laden soil cannot sustain their crops, and contact with the waters of the Mogpog River causes skin lesions and rashes.  The residents filed a civil case against Marcopper Mining in 2001, but this has yet to see resolution. Today more than half of the plaintiffs are in their 50s and one-third are already in their 70s and 80s.

GROUPS DENOUCE KILLINGS OF ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISTS

MANILA, Philippines – Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM), an advocacy group on environmental and human rights issues and people’s movement composed of more than eighty (80) organizations from mining-affected communities and civil society organizations nationwide, denounces the killings of environmental activists Gensun Agustin in Buguey Cagayan and Ricardo Ganad in Victoria, Oriental Mindoro.

“ATM denounces the brutal killings of environmental activists Gensun Agustin in Buguey Cagayan and Ricardo Ganad in Victoria, Oriental Mindoro. The death of the two staunch anti-mining leaders happened in less than a month apart and both murders cannot discount their strong opposition to mining and political affiliations to anti-mining local officials as the possible angles of motives to their gruesome deaths during this election period,” said ATM national coordinator Jaybee Garganera.

MANILA, Philippines — Environmental groups on Tuesday welcomed Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato Puno’s proposed “writ of kalikasan,” saying the move by was a “progressive measure” taken by the high court to address the “injustices” experienced by Filipinos from ecologically- destructive projects.

The Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM, Alliance to Stop Mining), an environmental group composed of mining-affected communities and civil society organizations, said the proposed writ would also help “address the injustices related to extractive industries and mining, in particular, in the country.”

GEOHAZARD MAPS REVEAL PHILIPPINE‘NO-GO ZONES’ TO MINING

MANILA, Philippines – Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM), an advocacygroup and people’s movement composed of more than eighty (80) organizationsfrom mining-affected communities and civil society organizations nationwide, urgegovernment to use geohazard maps to review mining tenements and abandoned minesto prevent mining disaster.

“Recently, theDepartment of Environment of Natural Resources (DENR) has presented a Php 60million geohazard mapping study of the Philippines that identified landslideand flood prone areas in the country. This data should be maximized to strategically mitigate mining disasters– if effectively integrated in land use planning, land development,disaster-risk reduction and climate change adaptation” said Jaybee Garganera,ATM National Coordinator.

“The toplandslide prone and flood prone provinces such as Benguet, Mt. Province,Kalinga Apayao, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, etc. identified by DENR are thesame provinces which host big mine operations in the country. These geohazardareas impacted both by bad weather and mining put communities at high-risk tocatastrophe”, warns Garganera.

“Benguet hosts threebig mining operations and three abandoned mines. Last year, typhoons andlandslides did not spare mining host communities, Itogon and Mankayan in theprovince, that affected at least 50 families that had to be evacuated fromtheir homes”, said Garganera.
