James Rowe killing in 1989, and the human rights organization Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP) appeal for P-Noy to consider the release of their detained loved ones and all political prisoners/detainees in his SONA declaration on July 26, 2010.

In the morning of July 26, the group released hundreds of doves and dozens of balloons with a vertical banner containing their call to free all political prisoners in front of Ever Gotesco in Commonwealth Avenue near Batasan.  “This is to symbolize and express our appeal to President Aquino.  We are hoping that he considers the release of Juanito Itaas and all political prisoners in his SONA declaration,” Jonal Javier, program coordinator of Task Force Detainees of the Philippines said.

“Umaapela ako at nagsusumamo po sa mahal nating Presidente Noynoy na palayain na ang aking asawa. Matagal na po siyang nagdurusa sa kulungan sa kasalanang hindi naman talaga niya ginawa. Tapusin na po niya ang paghihirap ng aming mga kalooban,” (I am appealing to our beloved President Noynoy for the release of my husband.  He has been suffering in jail for a crime he really did not commit. He (P-Noy) must end our sufferings)  Mrs. Itaas lamented.

James Rowe, the American soldier who was working with the Joint United States Military Advisory Group (JUSMAG) and was active in the anti-insurgency operation during the anti-bases campaign launched by activists in the late 80s.

TFDP records show that after the release of eight (8) political prisoners last July 8, through the conditional pardon signed by PGMA, there remain 263 political prisoners in different detention centers nationwide. “We are confident and hoping that President Aquino could do better and release not only eight, but ALL political prisoners and detainees,” Javier added.

“We would like to tell our President that ‘ang matuwid na daan’ is for our government to respect, protect and fulfill the human rights of the people, and one way is to end the sufferings of activists and freedom fighters like Juanito Itaas by releasing ALL political prisoners, ” TFDP concluded.#
