“While we welcome the order of PNoy to Secretary De Lima (DoJ) to withdraw the case against Morong 43 as a step towards reconciliation and peace, this should pave the way for the review of all cases and the release of all political prisoners in the country,”  Emmanuel Amistad, Executive Director of the Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP), a human rights organization, declared in a statement during their commemoration of the International Human Rights day in front of the Department of Justice together with Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates (PAHRA).

The group calls for PNoy to look beyond the Morong 43 and the rebel soldiers and look into the plight of almost 300 political prisoners and detainees nationwide.

According to TFDP, political prisoners include Muslims who are wrongfully accused and jailed for crimes of terrorism, bombings and killings.  They are the suspected rebels who have been charged with common crimes.  They are the alleged sympathizers, farmers, workers, students, and human rights defenders who are wrongfully linked of involvement with armed groups.

“Most of them have suffered for years. Juanito Itaas has been imprisoned for more than two decades for the Col. James Rowe killing.  Basilides Badion and Gerry Butial have been detained and tried for almost 15 years for the Zarcal killing,” Amistad added.

“They, along with more than 300 political prisoners and detainees, also deserve an act of reconciliation and justice.  They too deserve freedom,” He further said.

In celebration of human rights week and the political prisoners’ day last December 7, 2010, the Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP) reiterates it call for PNoy to release all political prisoners and political detainees in the country.

“We honor all freedom fighters, human rights defenders and common people who are victims of political repression.  It is time to set them free. Let these men and women of conviction rejoin society. PNoy must act now!” he concluded.

TFDP together with members of the Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates (PAHRA) in their commemoration of the International Human Rights Day held series of protest actions that started in Quezon City circle and went through different government agencies including the Department of Justice to call for the release of all victims of political incarceration and other human rights violations.
