James Rowe killing in 1989, and the human rights organization Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP) appeal for P-Noy to consider the release of their detained loved ones and all political prisoners/detainees in his SONA declaration on July 26, 2010.

In the morning of July 26, the group released hundreds of doves and dozens of balloons with a vertical banner containing their call to free all political prisoners in front of Ever Gotesco in Commonwealth Avenue near Batasan.  “This is to symbolize and express our appeal to President Aquino.  We are hoping that he considers the release of Juanito Itaas and all political prisoners in his SONA declaration,” Jonal Javier, program coordinator of Task Force Detainees of the Philippines said.

Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP) and 100 strong members of the Free All Political Prisoners/Detainees Campaign Network launch their “White Ribbon for Freedom Campaign” by holding a peaceful and symbolic tying of white ribbons to the barbed wire fences blocking the Mendiola entrance to Malacañang.  They call for President Aquino to release Juanito Itaas and all other political prisoners.

The group accompanies Glenda “Jojo” Itaas and her children to the Office of the President in sending a letter of appeal urging President Benigno Aquino III to use his good will and executive power to release and end the 21 long years of political imprisonment of her husband Juanito Itaas.  He was arrested in 1989 and was convicted for the killing of Col. James Rowe, an American Military Official.

OMCT Urgent Action: EJK of three brothers
Tuesday, 20 July 2010 16:52
Alleged extrajudicial killings of three brothers, including a minor, namely Mr. Eric Miraflores, Mr. Raymond Miraflores and Rosmil Miraflores

Case PHL 090710/ PHL 090710.CC
URGENT CAMPAIGNS/ CHILD CONCERN
Alleged extrajudicial killings, including of a minor/ Risk of impunity

The International Secretariat of the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) requests your URGENT intervention in the following situation in the Philippines.
Brief description of the situation

The International Secretariat of OMCT has been informed by the Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP), a member of OMCT SOS-Torture Network, about the alleged extrajudicial killings of three brothers, including a minor, namely Mr. Eric Miraflores (27 years old), Mr. Raymond Miraflores (23 years old) and Rosmil Miraflores (16 years old), in Sitio Hobol, Masinloc, Zambales, by members of the Zambales Provincial Mobile Group-Philippine National Police (PMG- PNP).

According to the information received, on 2 June 2010, Mr. Eric Miraflores, Mr. Raymond Miraflores and Rosmil Miraflores went with their tricycles to the family’s farm in Sitio Hobol to help out their father. This latter arrived a bit later and proceeded to do his chores when he heard several gunshots. Out of fear, he went into hiding and only later was he informed that his three sons had died.

According to the same information, when the three bodies were brought to the family house, the parents were puzzled to find that their sons were wearing camouflage uniforms, different from the shirts and pants they were wearing when they had left the house in the morning. All three bodies reportedly bore several gunshot wounds and bruises. It is also reported that Mr. Eric Miraflores’s Identification Card (ID), wallet and mobile phone were missing.

According to a statement made by a police inspector of PMG-PNP to local media, Mr. Eric Miraflores, Mr. Raymond Miraflores and Rosmil Miraflores, suspected of being members of an armed rebel group, were killed during a supposed encounter with the police. The police confiscated a hand gun that was allegedly used by the victims as well as their tricycles. However, the family denies the account of the police and maintains that Mr. Eric Miraflores, Mr. Raymond Miraflores and Rosmil Miraflores were civilians and not affiliated with any group. It also affirms that none of the three owned a gun or knew how to use it.

ZERO TORTURE DRIVE Continues...

PGMA signed Republic Act 9745 or the Anti-Torture Act of 2009, which criminalizes “torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment,” in November 10, 2009. Civil society and concerned groups are full of hope that this would help to put a stop in a culture of impunity in human rights violations in the country.
