Immediately implement RA 9745! Free all political prisoners/detainees! Jail torturers!
On Torture
Thursday, 24 June 2010 10:45
Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP), as a human rights organization joins fellow advocates and relatives of victims of torture in the worldwide commemoration of the International Day in Support of Torture Victims by calling for the immediate implementation of RA 9745 (Anti-Torture Law) and for P-Noy to release all political prisoners and political detainees who are mostly victims of torture.

TFDP celebrates the enactment of RA 9745, a product of decades of arduous lobby and campaign by all who wish to banish torture from our midst. The war against torture has not been won by the enactment of an anti-torture law, there is still a need to be vigilant and determined in pursuing cases against torturers and other perpetrators of human rights violations. Only when we have sent a crystal clear message to violators that they face retribution through our justice system can we begin to celebrate. Today, torture remains a bloodstain that can not be washed away until impunity is dead and buried.

Drafting of the Implementing Rules and Regulations for the Anti-Torture Law Begins

After the passage of Republic Act 9745, the law penalizing acts of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, last November of 2009, the next step for the Philippine government is to draft the law’s Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR).  The IRR will serve as the guidelines for the effective implementation of the law.

“Gintong Yaman ng Sinirang Bayan” is a satirical play about dreams, lives and relationships of families in a community in Northern Luzon that is being affected by the impending mining operation in the area.

The play is set in a barrio in Nueva Vizcaya during the course of a foreign mining company’s application in the province. The residents of the community find themselves with differing stands and opinions regarding the mining operation which poses to offer the residents with a golden opportunity.

Ruben, in his search for the golden dream and his quest to make it big, grabbed the scholarship grant from the mining company, much to his mother’s dismay.  Other inhabitants of the community engage themselves in heated debates regarding the positive and negative effects the mining operation will bring.

Ruben must decide.  Will he go after his golden dream despite the disapproval of his loved ones and the destruction of his native land?  What is the truth behind his father’s death and what will its implication be on Ruben’s decision?

ZERO TORTURE DRIVE Continues...

PGMA signed Republic Act 9745 or the Anti-Torture Act of 2009, which criminalizes “torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment,” in November 10, 2009. Civil society and concerned groups are full of hope that this would help to put a stop in a culture of impunity in human rights violations in the country.
