AMRSP Calls for Friday Prayer and Fasting, Vigilance and Commitment amidst growing threat of failure of election

Member congregations and Mission Partners of the Association of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines (AMRSP), the religious group that led the peoples’ campaign for truth during the ZTE broadband deal scandal and against cha-cha, again are calling for peoples’ unified action against the growing threat of a failure of election in May 2010.

In a statement issued by AMRSP addressed to all its brothers and sisters, Sr. Mary John Mananzan, OSB and Fr. Jesus Malit, SSS, AMRSP Co-Chairpersons call for a PRAYER AND FASTING, VIGILANCE and COMMITMENT amidst the many glitches in the Automated Election System and the seeming cavalier attitude of COMELEC officials about these.

They added, “We see unfolding before our eyes what we have suspected – GMA’s desire to cling to power at all cost - her running for congress, her manipulation of the law to make her cohorts run for congress, the prostitution of the party list system to enable ridiculous representations like Mikey Arroyo representing the security guards, one of their relatives representing balut vendors, etc. Now the Supreme Court has done the unconscionable act – allowing Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to name the Supreme Court Chief Justice even against the Constitution and preceding decisions of the SC. In light of these events, we see the possibility of 1) failed elections due to various technical causes; 2) failure of proclamation of national candidates; 3) transition government headed by GMA; 4) massive undetectable electronic cheating; 5) Junta; 6) Martial Law.”

AMRSP will be holding consecutive Masses for peaceful elections and turn over every Friday at 6:00 pm in La Salle Greenhills chapel beginning April 9 up to July 2, 2010 as its way to ensure peaceful, honest and credible May 2010 elections.

The AMRSP Co-Chairpersons urged their communities to join them in prayer every Friday and light a candle for clean, honest, peaceful and credible elections. They implored the people to VOTE AND TO WATCH AT POLLING PLACES and CANVASSING AREAS. They warned against any attempt to frustrate the people’s will before, during and after elections.

The first of the Friday Masses last April 9, 2010 was celebrated by Bishop Broderic Pabillo and participated in by different congregations and mission partners from the grassroots.

Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP) is a mission partner of AMRSP.
