vol_22_no._1Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP) declares its support for Jun Lozada and the people’s quest for truth, accountability and justice.

Today our nation finds itself once again in the eye of a political crisis that stems from Arroyo’s shamefaced denial of culpability and unwillingness to be accountable for the corruption and irregularities that surrounds the ZTE Broadband deal.
In fact, the testimonies delivered by former Commission on Election (COMELEC) Chairperson Benjamin Abalos, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Lito Atienza, Mike Defensor, and others who are implicated in the allegations made by Lozada shows that there is a concerted effort on the part of government to hide the truth by lies, deceit, bribery and threats.

TFDP believes that in the face of such blatant attempt to silence the truth, the only option left for the people is for them to once again assert their sovereign will in the parliaments of the street.  It is in this sense that we fully support the calls for a new people power that would struggle not only against the corruption of our leaders but more importantly for comprehensive and genuine social reform.

However, although it is true that Arroyo and her corrupt allies personify the moral bankruptcy of this administration, change in leadership without change in the social structures that breed inequality will only lead to another failed people power revolt.

The roots of our government’s moral bankruptcy stem from the fact that our society has an economic system that worships profit and puts aside the welfare of the people.  The truth is we live in a society where greed is valued as a means to achieve wealth and success, while the spirit of community and civic pride is undermined by self interest.

Moral renewal of the body politic can only happen if and when we established a society and government that respects, protects and fulfils human rights.  To this end, TFDP calls on the Filipino people to work for the establishment of a society that will end the rule of the few, dismantle the structures that breed social inequity, uphold the spirit of community, and puts premium on people who show honesty, integrity, and moral courage.
